CPM Calculator
Enter any two of impressions, CPM, and total cost — the calculator solves for the third and shows the cost per single impression.
Campaign cost
Working with CPM
CPM ties three numbers together in one simple ratio: cost, impressions, and the rate itself. Brands buying reach on a fixed budget want to know how many impressions that budget buys at a quoted CPM; brands who just ran a campaign want to back out the effective CPM they actually paid once the final impression count comes in. Both are the same equation solved for a different variable.
Because CPM is quoted per thousand impressions rather than per single view, the cost-per-impression figure is usually a fraction of a cent — useful for comparing very different scales of campaign on an apples-to-apples basis.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does CPM actually mean?
CPM stands for cost per mille — mille being Latin for thousand — so it's simply the cost of 1,000 impressions: CPM = (total cost ÷ impressions) × 1,000. It's one of the oldest ad-pricing metrics, borrowed from print and broadcast advertising long before digital media existed.
How do I use CPM to work out a campaign's total cost?
Rearrange the same formula: cost = CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000. If a creator or platform quotes a $15 CPM and you want 200,000 impressions, that's 15 × 200,000 ÷ 1,000 = $3,000. Enter any two of impressions, CPM, and cost into the calculator above and it solves for the missing one.
Is a lower CPM always better?
Not necessarily — CPM only measures cost per view, not quality of attention. A cheap CPM on an audience that never converts can cost more per result than a pricier CPM on a highly relevant one. Pair CPM with a performance metric like the Campaign ROI Calculator to see the fuller picture.
How is CPM different from CPC or CPA?
CPM charges for exposure (every 1,000 times an ad is shown, regardless of clicks), CPC (cost per click) charges only when someone clicks, and CPA (cost per acquisition) charges only when someone converts. CPM is common for awareness and reach campaigns; CPC and CPA are more common when the goal is a direct action.
